Confined Space entry training is a requirement by law and legislation within Australia.
Unfortunately, many businesses and individuals don’t know about their obligations until it’s to late.

By working with our team we will ensure you are assessed and if deemed to be successfully competent, you will obtain a unit of competency that enables for the safe work practices: RIIWHS202D Enter and work in confined spaces.

This course;RIIWHS202D Enter and work in confined spaces is a full 8hour day.

As this is a physical course we ask that ALL students understand that our training is demanding and physical. You will be required to ascend and decent ladders and ropes, don protective clothing, rescue live casualties. As such we ask that if you have any physical or mental conditions that may prohibit you from this training, or, if you have any limitations; Be acceptable or unacceptable, that you let our team know at least 24hours prior to any course. failure to do so will void your course fee and will result in your removal from the training at any stage.

This competency applies to operators who are required to wear breathing apparatus for part of their job – because they are working in a confined space, with hazardous gases/vapours, in an oxygen deficient atmosphere or for other applications requiring the wearing of breathing apparatus. They may also be required to wear it in emergency situations, however this is not the prime focus of this unit, and so makes this unit different from PUAFIR207A Operate breathing apparatus open circuit, as it has no prerequisite and is much broader in its application.

RIIWHS202D

(Enter and work in confined spaces)

This unit covers the entering and working in confined spaces in resources and infrastructure industries. It includes planning and preparing for entry of confined spaces; entry and working in confined spaces, exiting confined spaces and cleaning up.

This unit specifies the competency required to work in a confined space (enclosed or partially enclosed) for the purpose of carrying out work or inspections. It includes the minimum criteria for competency assessment. This unit includes entry and exit procedures, assessment of associated risks and how to operate safely in a confined space which is at atmospheric pressure during occupancy.

This unit can be completed as a stand alone course or as part of a skills set. There are several skill set options available.

The target group will be construction workers requiring training in safely working in confined space at worksites within:
  • Civil construction
  • Coal mining
  • Drilling
  • Extractive industries
  • Metalliferous mining
People who supervise but do not necessary enter confined spaces need to be aware of the risks and equipment checks that need to be in place to adequately protect people under their control.

**There is no legislative requirement for refresher training for any units of competency from National Training Packages. It is suggested that refresher training for enter and work in confined spaces could be conducted every 3 years. This refresher training is at the discretion of the employer.

(Issue work permits)

This unit of competency covers the skills and knowledge required to issue work permits. It covers an understanding of the permit system and the limitations of each permit, and making decisions regarding the need for and correct use of each permit. This unit includes the issue of any and all permits. Permits are called ‘clearances’ by some organisations.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

This competency applies to personnel who are required to issue appropriate permits to work to persons conducting a variety of activities in workplace environments in which hazards exist or specific procedures need to be followed and monitored to protect the safety of personnel and the integrity of plant or process.

This unit of competency applies to an individual working alone or as part of a team or group and working in liaison with other shift team members and the control room operator, as appropriate.

(Conduct hazard analysis)

This unit of competency covers the skills and knowledge required to conduct a hazard analysis. These are typically called:

  • job safety analysis (JSA)
  • job hazard analysis (JHA)
  • job safety and environmental analysis (JSEA)
  • safe work method statement (SWMS)

It is not intended to apply to simpler routine hazard checks, such as ‘Take 5’, Step Back 5×5, five step or similar.

This might be done as an independent activity in order to identify hazards and the appropriate hazard controls, or it might be done as part of a broader process, such as identifying and appling for the permits required for a job.

The conducting of a hazard analysis may be required under a safety case, by organisation procedures or simply as being good practice.

Gas test Safe Response

(Gas test atmospheres)

This unit of competency covers the skills and knowledge required to test the working atmosphere, using electronic test apparatus, to find out if it is safe for the proposed work.

It applies to situations where an individual may be required to carry out gas testing of an atmosphere prior to entering a specific area or workspace. The competency required the person to interpret readings and take actions based on the interpretation.

Working environment may be hazardous, unpredicatble, subject to time pressure, chaotic and expose responders to risk, on land or water, by day or night. workplace atmospheres may include visible and invisible hazards and hazardous surfaces.

This unit is suitable for use in the following situations:

  • conffined spaces
  • enclosed and parrtially enclosed spaces
  • hot work
  • storage tanks, silos, pits, pipes, shafts, ducts, transport vechiles and ships
  • testing as part of working under a work permit
  • open areas
  • holding the gas tester by hand
  • lowering the has tester into a space, e.g. on a line

This unit of competency applies to an individual working alone or as part of a team or group and working in liaison with other shift team members and the control room operator, as appropriate.
